The Band & Pipes of the Irish Defence Forces
The Irish Defence Forces School of Music was founded in 1923 with the establishment of four military bands during the early years of the Irish state. Defence Forces bands continue to perform at all major military and state ceremonial occasions including all Presidential Inaugurations from that of the first president of Ireland, Douglas Hyde to the present day.

In addition to fulfilling all ceremonial music requirements for the Irish State and military ceremonial within the Irish Defence Forces, the bands fulfil a busy schedule of public engagements including annual concert engagements in venues such as the National Concert Hall Dublin, Royal Dublin Society Dublin, open air recitals in major venues throughout Ireland and a highly popular schools educational programme. In recent years Defence Forces bands have performed at international festivals and military tattoos in the UK, Italy, Holland, Germany, France and Canada.

Irish Defence Forces Pipe Bands
Since the establishment of a school of piping in the Curragh Camp Co. Kildare in 1926 there has been a proud tradition of piping in the Irish Defence Forces. Currently each of the Defence Forces Infantry Battalions and the Irish Air Corps has a pipe band on its establishment. Personnel of pipe bands perform their musical role in addition to their primary military duties, performing at state and military ceremonial and a host of local civilian events throughout Ireland. Defence Forces Pipe bands have always played an important part in many sporting occasions and will be well known to Irish audiences from their performances at the Royal Dublin Society grounds during the Dublin Horse Show in August of each year.
